Vacationers who come to the beautiful and historic Upstate New York town of Lake Placid are often astounded by the number of attractions. While this community moves at a blissfully slower pace than city dwellers are accustomed to, it does deliver more to do than many realize. Many Lake Placid NY attractions are available year-round, too.
Nestled in the stunning Adirondack Mountains, Lake Placid is home to destinations both indoors and out. The great outdoors, however, is one of the biggest reasons to come to this incredible destination.
You will soon discover that Lake Placid is in the High Peaks region. This region includes 46 mountains which are over 4,000 feet tall. If you’re into mountain climbing, you might even want to join the “46ers” who have climbed all of these high peaks. Mt. Marcy is tallest at more than 5,300 feet.
Nearby is a slightly smaller peak - Whiteface Mountain, which is over 4,800 feet tall. If mountain climbing isn’t your thing, you can still enjoy the majesty of Whiteface Mountain. Just drive up Veterans Memorial Highway and then take an elevator or steps to the very top.

John Brown’s Farm State Historic Site, (2 John Brown Road, 518- 523-3900) – Is a popular stop for visitors to the area. Here you can rediscover the past while touring the home and farm of this famous abolitionist. Brown’s grave is also found on the site. There are also plenty of other museums to check out in the region, including the Chapman Historical Museum, the Six Nation Indian Museum and more.
Palace Theater – (2430 Main Street, 518-523-9271) – Take in a movie while you’re on vacation at this four-screen historic site. The Palace is an old-time theater, but you can catch contemporary shows here throughout the year.
Olympic Center and Museum (2634 Main Street, 518-523-1655) – Explore Olympic history, experience the Bobsled Adventure and witness expert skiers as they make jumps at this distinct destination.
Avalanche Adventures – (194 Saranac Inn Lane, 518-523-1195) – Enjoy outdoor adventures including bungee jumping, mini-golf and more at this unique destination.
Autumn in the mountains – While there isn’t a bad time to visit any of the many Lake Placid NY attractions, this region truly comes to life in the fall. If you love seeing beautiful colors, the region’s bold yellows, bright reds, deep browns and beautiful golds and rusts will not disappoint.
The stores and restaurants – If you want to get out and stretch your legs, take a stroll down Main Street. Here you can enjoy window shopping through a variety of quaint stores and grab a bite to eat at a variety of different establishments. High Falls Gorge – Take in the visual thrill of seeing a roaring waterfall and hike nature trails at this adventure destination near the Ausable River. The Gorge features walkways, well-groomed paths, sturdy bridges and more to make exploration easier.
